The radio is really great. I run it with an external 17in LCD screen, Yaesu SP8
speaker, Acom 1000 amplifier and enjoy using this combination. My other radio is
an IC775, which I found better than IC756 Pro II, TS950SDX, FT 1000D &
FT1000MP Mk V. The IC7800 is substantially better on receive than the IC775. (as
it should be). Very quite receiver. Generally don't need to use the DSP noise
reduction. The noise blanker actually works, but takes a little playing around.
No intermod problems, receiver overload or hashy fatiguing noise that comes from
the IC756 Pro II. AGC is excellent. You can actually hear and understand signals
close to the noise, which you can't on the IC756 Pro II. Build quality is
excellent, quality control good (it's an Icom) but I have reported a minor
bandscope spurious signal about 37 Khz down from the centre frequency on the
scope. It was reported back to Icom Japan and they now have a fix for this. As
the problem is minor I am waiting 6 months or so before sending the radio into
ICOM just in case any other factory fixes / firmware updates are released. I
have finally found what I have been looking for in a receiver for a long time.
Though the initial cost is high, I see it as good value if I don't need to
change my radio for 10 years. I will send you a photo in a few days.
